Reconstruction of baryon fraction in intergalactic medium through dispersion measurements of fast radio bursts

چکیده

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) probe the total column density of free electrons in intergalactic medium (IGM) along path propagation though dispersion measures (DMs) which depend on baryon mass fraction IGM, i.e., $f_{\rm IGM}$. In this letter, we investigate large-scale clustering information DMs to study evolution When combining with Planck 2018 measurements, could give tight constraints IGM}(z)$ from about $10^4$ FRBs intrinsic DM scatter $30(1+z)~ \rm pc/cm^3$ spanning 80% sky and redshift range $z=0-3$. Firstly, consider Taylor expansion up second order, find that mean relative standard deviation $\sigma(f_{\rm IGM})\equiv\left\langle \sigma[f_{\rm IGM}(z)] /f_{\rm IGM}(z) \right\rangle$ is 7.2%. order alleviate dependence fiducial model, also adopt a non-parametric methods work, local principle component analysis. We obtain consistent, but weaker IGM}(z)$, namely IGM})$ 24.2%. With forthcoming surveys, be complimentary method IGM.

Probing the Intergalactic Medium with Fast Radio Bursts

The recently discovered fast radio bursts (FRBs), presumably of extra-galactic origin, have the potential to become a powerful probe of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We point out a few such potential applications. We provide expressions for the dispersion measure and rotation measure as a function of redshift, and we discuss the sensitivity of these measures to the He II reionization and the ...

Probing the Cosmic Reionization History and Local Environment of Gamma-Ray Bursts through Radio Dispersion

We discuss the effect of dispersion delay due to intervening ionized media in the radio emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). For high redshift GRBs (z > ∼ 3), the ionized intergalactic medium (IGM) should be the dominant source of dispersion without local or foreground contamination, offering a unique probe of the cosmic reionization epoch through measures of the ionized gas column density out ...

On Associating Fast Radio Bursts with Afterglows

A radio source that faded over 6 days, with a redshift z ≈ 0.5 host, has been identified by Keane et al. (2016) as the transient afterglow to a Fast Radio Burst (FRB 150418). We report followup radio and optical observations of the afterglow candidate, and find a source that is consistent with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). If the afterglow-candidate is nonetheless a prototypical FRB aftergl...

Physical Constraints on Fast Radio Bursts

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are isolated, ms radio pulses with dispersion measure (DM) of order 10 pc cm. Galactic candidates for the DM of high latitude bursts detected at GHz frequencies are easily dismissed. DM from bursts emitted in stellar coronas are limited by free-free absorption and those from HII regions are bounded by the nondetection of associated free-free emission at radio wavelength...
